Dan Balaban
Chairman and Director
Under Dan’s leadership Greengate has developed $1 billion or 450 MW of producing renewable energy projects in Alberta. Prior to Greengate, Dan was the Founder, President and CEO of Roughneck.ca, a leading provider of software solutions for the oil and gas industry which was acquired in 2005 for more than $5 million. In his life prior to entrepreneurship, Dan worked as a management consultant with top tier firms including Ernst & Young and PwC. Dan was a Senior Manager with PwC and a key member of the firm’s e-business consulting practice. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Dan is also the Chairman of the Calgary JCC, a member of the board of the Pembina Institute and formerly a member of the board of the Independent Power Producers Society of Alberta. Dan was selected as one of Avenue magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2009, named one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People 2010 and 2013 by Alberta Venture magazine, a winner of Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2012 Prairies, and named one of Canada’s Clean50 for 2015.
Jordan Balaban
Director
Jordan’s keen financial acumen has helped guide Greengate Power through acquisitions and divestitures totaling about $1 billion. He manages all treasury and accounting functions as well as oversees all the budgeting and capital requirements. Prior to joining Greengate , as the Vice President of Delek Properties Jordan played an instrumental role of the development of real estate projects across Alberta. He is also the Co-Founder and Executive Producer of Pink Ribbon Pin-Ups, a philanthropic project started in 2009 that supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Jordan graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce, where he played varsity basketball for four years and was an Academic All-Canadian.
Samuel Spanglet
Director
Sam was most recently the Vice President Operations, Oil Sands and President, Albian Sands Energy at Shell Canada. There, he oversaw all oilsands operations, including the Scotford Complex and Albian Sands. Previously, he was the general manager of the Scotford Complex, responsible for managing Shell’s manufacturing in Western Canada, as well as overseeing the successful integration of a newly constructed upgrader. He also held other managerial positions within Shell Canada during his 25-year tenure. Sam holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the Technion Institution of Technology in Haifa, Israel.
Steve Parry
Director
Steve is a well-respected cross-border serial investor, most recently as a Managing Director at NGEN Partners, a leading cleantech venture firm based in Santa Barbara, California. Prior to this 10 year investment career, Steve was a practicing geologist with experience building and managing global mineral exploration teams and companies. At BHP Billiton, Steve was the General Manager, Innovation for the company’s exploration subsidiary, with responsibility for the junior resources investment program. Steve has now relocated back to Canada and is based in Toronto for his role as CEO at Grenville. Steve is also Chair at DIRTT Environmental Solutions. His non-profit activities include his role as Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. Steve is a recipient of the Canada 125 Medal for his work on behalf on Canadian Resource communities.
Lorne Carson
Director
Lorne is a professional Engineer and a partner at the Osler Law firm based in Calgary. His focus is primarily on finance in the oil and gas, pipeline, petro-chemical, electrical power, renewables, and infrastructure sectors. Lorne has experience with loans in both the bank and capital markets and has been involved in a number of the larger project development and project finance transactions in Canada. Lorne has also had significant experience with international project development and project finance transactions and also practises in the lending and structured finance areas. Many of the projects Lorne has worked on include multi-parties and Lorne is familiar with multi-party ownership, joint ventures, combined financings and governance and intercreditor issues.
